NHS Mail service disruption

We are aware of an issue regarding a test email that originated from a member of staff within our organisation that has affected the NHS Mail system.
A spokesperson for South East CSU said: “NHS Digital has confirmed that the national delays in NHS mail were caused by a technical issue with the system and not the fault of an individual member of NHS staff.”

NHS Digital has confirmed that the issue was due to a fault in the system that included all NHS Mail users in the distribution list in error. This was exacerbated by recipients replying in response and increasing the volume of emails associated with the list. 

We are working closely with NHS Digital, who deleted the distribution list as soon as they were aware of the issue so that no one else could respond.

We are supporting our staff member who has unfairly been the subject of numerous social media posts and media stories.

We have sent a message to our customers using SMS, notifying them to delete the email and do not reply.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused other NHS Mail users.
